25,000L$ SL Illustrated Calendar Girl Competition

The PR Manager sent me an IM and a notecard in-world to inform me that the Calendar Girl Competition is still on despite of what happened in the voting system. Well, it’s a good move since every contestant (I bet) wants a piece of those thousands of linden dollars as prizes.

The finals will be held on the 24th of November at 9am where the the top two competitors from 44 participating establishments that range from clubs to modeling agencies will fight it out for the award of SL Illustrated Finest to walk away with 25,000L with 5 Runner ups to win $5,000L each.  The establishment with the most outstanding Calendar also stands a chance to win 25,000L with 5 runner ups having a chance to win 5,000L each as well.

They will have the best of the best judging the finals of the competition with judges that include  a judge from The Avastar, SL Illustrated, fashion designers and various other industry experts.

Date   :  11 November 2007 (Sunday)
Time    :  9am-1pm
Venue :  SL Illustrated, slillustrated (127, 190, 26)

Media attending are asked to arrive at 8:30 am to ensure they are able to get inside the event before the arrival of the crowd.

Finally, SL Illustrated is a young and growing organization.  They had nothing – literally nothing when it started  in the middle of September.  They now have an organization with 50 partners and affiliations with Avastar and more models participating than any other contest in SL to date.  Like any new company they have their glitches but watch as SL Illustrated grows.

SL Illustrated Finest is organized by SL Illustrated and the public events on the 11th & 24th November are coordinated and organized by Rusch Raymaker of AVENUE Inc.

So for those who are getting bored come to this great event and see beautiful ladies!

If you liked this post, buy me a coffee. (Suggested: 3$ for a Caffè Mocha or 6$ if ever I have a date.)

Hrrmm… Still not quite sure what I think of this. Certainly not poorly, just not sure if it is my cup of tea. Granted, I love getting in front of the camera and taking shots of others; just not sure about the contest aspect and other details. Definitely a fun way to try to win linden.

Just my opinion… almost all of the contest winners have similar appearances in terms of skins and hairstyles. You always get the Caucasian or slightly tanned slender girl with curly medium length hair, either blonde, brown, or other similar colours. These contests lack variety in both culture, ethnicity, and style. You rarely get creative contests such as artistic costumes, best makeup, best shape, best hairstyles, etc, except really tiny ones in nightclubs and whatnot.

(Apparently, I type too much. This will come in two pieces… And hopefully only two. :P )

I would accredit this to a variety of ‘Americanized’ factors:

1.) Second Life is an American-based company.
2.) SL Illustrated mirrors the name ‘Sports Illustrated’, which is an American-based magazine.

Now, what does this mean? Surely, America prides itself of providing opportunity to all and having diversity. Of course, what we pride ourselves on is not necessarily what is always the truth of the matter.

In America, there is a certain social standard of beauty, be it real or virtual flesh. Most American models are Caucasian, most American films feature Caucasians as main characters, and American-based products like shampoo and panty hose are marketed in that the ‘norm’ is a Caucasian consumer. Therefore, in an American-based company with a contest that has an American feel, the socially constructed perception of what is the best look is going to reflect this.

Is it right? Well, a sociologist might have trouble presenting a clear-cut answer, but on a personal level, I say no. I am Caucasian of what could be seen as ‘typical’ European heritage. Yet, I would be very uncomfortable calling myself “white”. I am not so plain, not so basic, and neither is anyone else, be they of African, Fillopean, or Marsian. On Second Life, my normal skin cannot be found naturally in the real life, yet a doubt it would be seen as little more than ‘weird’ in such a contest. As such, I am very proud that there at least some contestants standing up for diversity of appearance- SL is our world, and our imagination, so let us not allow the social grind get to us!

Once watched a video in youtube that said something like “don’t read beauty magazines, it’ll only make you feel ugly’ lol

I wished I joined

Actually, that is from a song called “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”. Who the original words are by is debated – and might have been settled; I did not keep up on that case – but it is done in song form by Baz Luhrman. It is a graduation speech for the class of 1999.

Lol extensive answer Trebuchet…
Yes I realize SL is very Americanized, except for the few regions left that has other cultures. Can’t blame that as the company itself, along with most other companies in the world, are American. Not saying American things aren’t good (except perhaps music and games), but it would be wonderful to see a better variety of things in SL. =)

I try very hard to incorporate Philippine Culture into my Place. You can visit my place, 3 Stars and a Sun, at Scaramanga (80, 232, 66).

Even the name of the place, 3 Stars and a Sun, was derived from our country’s flag and you would always see my avatar wearing the traditional Barong Tagalog which I purchased from Shai’s store. It’s the most expensive item of clothing I purchased for my avatar. Ha ha ha!

What does the outfit look like? =)
The most expensive piece of clothing I bought was the mermaid outfit which costs around 1,300L… ouch.

What can I say? I am very interested in human behavior, and when given the opportunity, I will present what is on my mind, especially if I feel it is valid.

No need to do that because the winner is raffled from the top 8 commentators and not the one with the most post!

Well, now I am confused about the rules. It says ‘top commentator’, which I interpret as the individual who has the most comments and top position. Oh well. :P

No it’s the top commentator, and not a raffle between the top 5. I think Chino changed the rule a few weeks ago.

At one point, I got the impression that everyone in the top rank on the right got a certain amount, and there would not be such a race to the top.

I was just about to say that.
I think it’s more fair that way too, that the top 3 or so would receive a portion of the prize.
However, that would mean the traffic would decrease dramatically.

Well, you would have more regularity and more honest posts that way. He would not be bombed with all the comments and activity as he is right now, and would instead have a steady traffic rating. Of which, I do not know what is better for a sight. I mean, I know in world, places that have steady activity rather than just peaks of drops in activity are considered better.

Of course, it’s the same concept in stock markets. Peaks just represent that a depression is soon to follow hehe.

Oh, do not use stocks as an example too much- that is completely beyond me. :P But yes, steady is much more valuable than a mash of extremes.

Very interesting..I think some of the fashion designers in SL should become real-life fashion designers! Some of the clothing is so beautiful and profeshional, I’m sure people would buy it. I guess its just hindering money wise in the real world.. I wonder who won the competition?! ^_^
