Customized viewer: Surf and live your Second Life
Today, I received an email from OnRez.com that Electricsheep has finally released their very own Second Life viewer. I was so excited to try it but Linden Lab seems to have disabled the login server of SL for a while.
CSI Focused Viewer
It’s a public knowledge that CSI: NY has now a presence in SL and this OnRez Viewer is built for the new hot game in-world. With this new viewer, I want to see if I can login 2 SL account simultaneously. This OnRez Viewer is a completely different Second Life viewer and while I can’t make an extensive review about it, you can download the viewer here.

Interesting, this is getting a lot of press and blogs. Just be sure you get the toolbar before you leave the orientation island. It should be on the sign right when you enter. Also, audio/video does not always work for all users on these regions. It appears to be a random problem, just make sure that both audio and video are enabled. If it does not work try it in the other viewer, or just use the text button to read what you should be hearing.
You can download the toolbar from their site too. I have OnRez now and I used it the second day CSI: NY came online.
I had so much fun! I’m waiting for more cases to open. Plus, I got a L$5 bonus from Hoppy Pay for being the first hopper to set foot in one of their parcels. Isn’t that cool? (lol)

you can login multiple Sl accounts at once…just click on shortcut…properties….and put this in Target: “C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe” -multiple

Ooh so that’s how you get multiple accounts on… pretty convenient hehe. I just hope it works on my stubborn laptop.
Oye, my Sony VAIO would keel over and die if I tried that. I know another trick is to ’switch users’ on Window systems, which probably does the same thing.

I too downloaded the client from onrez. It is missing some features but it looks good with nice rounded graphics.
Cammy - Just so you are aware the only feature that has been disabled on the OnRez Viewer is full screen in windows. Some buttons have been changed and removed but all the features are still accessible by the menus. If you can’t find a feature please enable the Advanced and Build menus (under Viewer menu).

Do you mean overall speed in-world? That would be really nice as some places in SL, especially stores, are really laggy lol.
I have found turning off render items like particles , water, and trees on at least the regular viewer also helps with lag. And of course, turning down the graphics setting. Just a tidbit there.
I personally have been tentative about any new viewer just because of how unstable SL is on my laptop to begin with.
Turning off those particles doesn’t work that well for me. In fact, I don’t get the pattern for reducing lag at all. Sometimes I have no lag at all yet there are a few people around me, yet sometimes I have tremendous lag even when the entire map is empty.
I have also heard that if someone is using wireless or dial-up, it can completely screw up the whole place. So on that end, virtual society does affect the one avatar in a more direct, technical/physical manner.
Thanks Chino for the heads up on this viewer alternative. I’ve installed it and have been using it for a few days now. There are some features that I really like. The teleport back and history button is awesome. I always wanted that! The built-in anti-idle setting is great too.
I like that the Friends and Gestures are available right in the viewer with buttons. But probably the best feature is the built-in web browser. I often go back and forth between web browsing and SL, either for in-world functions, research, or just while I’m camping. Having the built-in browser is a real convenience.

I’ve pretty much switched back over to the default viewer again. Despite the several things I like about the OnRez viewer, it didn’t seem quite as stable as Linden’s viewer. Also, as OnRez states on their web site, they’ve had to add a later of code on top of their viewer to enable all the CSI junk, so I can do without that. Finally, I can’t find a way to upload files with OnRez. Only with the Linden viewer. Has anybody uploaded files to SL with the OnRez viewer?

CSI Rocks! It is what brought me to SL in the first place and I am having a blast!
