The NASA MMO project

I received an email that Linden Lab and NASA wanted a research company in SL to conduct a research (of course) regarding the coming plan of NASA to make a MMO Learning Game. Here’s the note.

NASA Learning Technologies has issued a Request for Information (RFI):

“Development of a NASA-based Massively Multiplayer Online Learning Game.”

However, I can’t post yet which Research Company is that since I’m not yet sure if the information is still confidential. What I can tell you guys is, that research company can be found in my free lindens page

I was reading the information in that link and i think that it can be awesome and very helpful to SL development, if it would create inside SL.

I didn’t understand if the NASA wants to create a what they planning to do, inside or outside SL, as an independent online game. Chino, can you clarify it for me, please?

NASA is planning to build a game. If it’s in SL, we’re not yet sure. That is why Linden Lab wants to conduct a research that in the end they can submit to NASA.

The research which will be conducted will help Linden Labs to get NASA interested in building that MMO in SL.

If NASA decided to build that MMO using Second Life as their platform then that would be fun. For now, they’re (NASA) just solicting information to be able to decide where to create this MMO learning game.

But, learning game? for educational purposes? I remember I saw some news like that at the JPL’s open house http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/pso/oh.cfm last year.

Thanks for the explanation Chino.
It would awesome if NASA build a game inside SL. I hope that NASA doesn’t build MMO outside SL, as an independent game, i think that, both sides will loose good stuff that could be shared. Both sides just win if NASA build it inside SL.
SL is always growing everyday, NASA has more to win than to loose, if they join their project to SL.

Frankly, I am stumped. I am awaiting your response to SS and LA’s queries too.

Really, it is a bit too much to expect that NASA will get involved in something like this. So, Chino, without wasting too much time, please clarify.

Almost got banned out of SL for spamming a spammer.
Well then i just reported him or her to the Lindens.

I received the same e-mail from the same research company. I don’t think I could ever answer or participate on something like that… o_o goes beyond my levels.

Wow! NASA using Second Life as a platform for their new research/learning game…
I think that would be a VERY cool addition to have to the SL world. The could do a lot with that- i’m thinking something like a replica Space Station with different areas to learn about all of NASA’s new findings and stuff.
too cool!

I thought they were planning on launching an educational game similar to second life, not really inside SL. Well, not as a main project.

this would not only be great to further NASA training but to educate the public better about Space exploration. SL would open a wide audience to NASA and if it comes in game format so be it…sometimes you learn more when you don’t even realize you are learning!

This sounds very interesting and not too far-fetched..even MTV has developed a multi-player avatar based online world! I haven’t looked into it much but it seems incredibly similar to second life (chat with others, customize your avatar.) But as online games move more and more into the social norm I’m sure more companies will develop their own “worlds.” Due to users and companies however Second Life currently has quite the advantage.

Second life is not the original virtual world simulator you know. That is why I am not surprised that there are ‘vitrual worlds’ out there beside second life

I didn’t know that, i thought that SL was an original and almost complete virtual world.
Sorry about my ignorance… :(
